What is the Financial Allocation Meter?
The Financial Allocation Meter (FAM) is a single, honest grade for your whole financial month. Instead of leaving you to interpret charts, FAM turns your income, spending and investments into one score — so in a glance you know whether you're on track, and exactly what to fix next.
How the FAM score works
Each month, FAM compares what you actually did against the monthly targets you set. Every area is scored as a simple ratio of actual ÷ target, then given a grade. Your overall FAM grade is the worst of the three — because a great expense month shouldn't hide weak investing.
Expense
spent ÷ expense target · lower is better
≤ 80% → Excellent
81–100% → Good
> 100% → Poor
Investment
invested ÷ investment target · higher is better
≥ 100% → Excellent
70–99% → Good
< 70% → Poor
Income
earned ÷ income target · higher is better
≥ 100% → Excellent
70–99% → Good
< 70% → Poor
Why a single grade beats endless charts
Most budgeting and money-management apps hand you dashboards full of numbers and expect you to draw your own conclusions. FAM does the interpreting for you. One grade tells you if this month was on track. If it isn't, FAM shows which area — spending, saving or investing — pulled you down, so you know precisely where to focus next month. It's the fastest way to build better money habits without becoming a spreadsheet expert.
Frequently asked questions
How do I improve my FAM score?
Spend at or below your expense target, and meet your income and investment targets. FAM highlights the weakest of the three each month so you always know the one area to focus on.
When does the FAM score appear?
FAM shows a grade once you've completed your basic profile, set the relevant monthly target, and recorded at least one transaction for the month. Until then it shows as Not Available.
Is Finance Tracker free?
Yes. Finance Tracker is a free personal finance and money-management app — track expenses, investments, budgets and your FAM score at no cost, with no ads.
What targets does FAM use?
Your own monthly income, expense and investment targets, which you set in your Finance Profile. FAM measures your actual activity against those personal goals — not generic benchmarks.
